Kevin D. Allen, P.E.

CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER + PRESIDENT

Kevin is the President and Chief Executive Officer of Thompson Consulting Engineers. With 34 years of experience (31 with the firm), his expertise covers all phases of mechanical consulting engineering, including design, energy analyses, life cycle costing, problem-solving and report preparation. He is accustomed to a wide variety of project types, including educational facilities, industrial facilities, central plants, and office buildings. He is highly skilled in the analysis of indoor air quality issues, investigative and remedial engineering and HVAC system commissioning.

Kevin serves as Principal-In-Charge on selected projects, supervises the firm’s mechanical staff, and coordinates the firm’s business development efforts. He is also responsible for the quality control of all the firm’s mechanical and plumbing design documents, specifications and standards.

Kevin is a registered professional engineer in Virginia and Georgia and a recognized LEED Accredited Professional by the U.S. Green Building Council. He graduated from Old Dominion University with a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering.

 
 
 

Kenzie Cambar, P.E.

EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT

Kenzie is the Executive Vice President of Thompson Consulting Engineers. He has 31 years of experience (30 with the firm) in electrical consulting engineering. His areas of expertise include power distribution, emergency power and generators, interior and exterior lighting and lighting control, energy calculations, voice and data networking systems, fire alarm systems, lightning protection, intrusion detection, access control and video surveillance systems for new building construction, as well as renovations.

Kenzie serves as Principal-In-Charge on selected projects, supervises the firm’s electrical staff, and is responsible for the quality control of all the firm’s electrical design documents, specifications and standards. He also manages the firm’s IT operations.

Kenzie is a registered professional engineer in Virginia, North Carolina and Georgia and a recognized LEED Accredited Professional by the U.S. Green Building Council. He graduated from Old Dominion University with a B.S. in Electrical Engineering.

 
 
 
 
 

Mark W. Thompson, P.E.

CHIEF FINANCIAL OFFICER

Mark is the Chief Financial Officer of Thompson Consulting Engineers. The second generation of Thompson engineers, his 41-year career (37 with the firm) has focused on HVAC system design, project management, specification development, quality control and contract administration. As a principal for over 30 years, he has been involved in all aspects of mechanical engineering and business management.

Today, Mark manages the firm’s finances, including budgeting, forecasting, expenses and profitability. He serves as an advisor for the firm’s mechanical design standards, specifications, quality control, and marketing initiatives. Additionally, he oversees employee benefits and policies and serves a mentor to the design staff.

Mark is a registered professional engineer in Virginia, North Carolina and Washington D.C. and a recognized LEED Accredited Professional by the U.S. Green Building Council. He graduated from Virginia Tech with a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering.

1954

OPEN FOR BUSINESS

In 1954, Mathew J. Thompson III, P. E. opened our firm’s doors for business. His graduation from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University’s Mechanical Engineering program was preceded by his graduation from the Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company Apprentice School as well as his service in the US Navy during World War II.

1973 – 1987

ESTABLISHING EXPERTISE IN ENGINEERING

In 1973, the company was incorporated as Mathew J. Thompson III, Consulting Engineers, Inc. Shortly thereafter, Mr. Thompson served as President of the Consulting Engineers Council of Virginia in 1974-75, and in 1987 he was recognized as Engineer of the Year by the Virginia Society of Professional Engineers and the Engineers Club of the Virginia Peninsula.

2002 – 2005

A NEW GENERATION OF LEADERS

In November 2002 Mr. Thompson retired, and the firm was purchased by Mark W. Thompson, P.E., George H. Chappell, Jr., and Kevin D. Allen, P.E. In 2005, to recognize the new leadership and ownership of the firm, the company’s trading name was changed to Thompson Consulting Engineers.

2009 – Today

SIX DECADES OF EXCEPTIONAL MEP DESIGN

In 2009, the firm moved from Newport News to its new, larger facility in Hampton. Today the firm employs over 35 people including engineers, technicians, construction administrators and support staff. Currently, the firm serves clients in the K-12 Education, Municipal Government, Higher Education, Corporate, Industrial, Healthcare markets, and more.
