Ocean Lakes Elementary School
Project Highlights
First net-zero energy school in the Virginia Beach Public School system, the second net-zero energy building in the area after the Brock Center and the first net-zero energy public building renovation in the State to achieve this status.
Design and construction were separated into two phases: Phase I included the window replacement, geothermal well field installation and classroom heat pump installation. Phase II included the replacement of the existing air-cooled rooftop units serving common spaces with water source heat pumps.
Mechanical system utilizes a geothermal water source heat pump (WSHP) configuration to condition the classrooms and larger spaces like the cafeteria, gymnasium, and library.
Administration spaces are cooled by a highly efficient air-cooled variable refrigerant flow (VRF) system while the geothermal system operates at minimum capacity during the summer.
